Santa Marta’s Sierra Nevada is a Caribbean coastal range distinct from the Andes range that makes up the majority of Colombia’s coffee lands. For this reason, there is a sense of self-reliance best symbolized by the level of intercropping common for most coffee farms where you will find bananas, corn, and avocado trees grown for local consumption. While self-sufficiency has many advantages, selling specialty coffee on the international market is not easily achieved in isolation. This is where Inconexus, a Colombian export company enters the picture. Inconexus has developed a successful model of sourcing specialty coffee in some of the most renowned growing regions of Colombia. The key is creating a support network for producers, which builds confidence resulting in excellent coffee. Inconexus has used this model to grow an organization of 19 producers called Grupo Sierra. The collaboration has helped the producers improve farm management and processing protocol. Producers also benefit from the close proximity of the Inconexus cupping lab and dry mill located in Santa Marta where coffee is quickly evaluated, and parchment is stored in grainpro for protection from the coastal humidity. The result is a distinct, complex, clean and consistent regional blend.
