New Arrival from Nicaragua
October 1, 2025
The PROCAFE cooperative is based in San Juan del Río Coco, in the Madriz department of Nicaragua, a region well known for producing high-quality specialty coffees. Founded in 2011 by 32 smallholder farmers, the group has since grown to include more than 160 members, with a strong participation of women producers. Coffee here is cultivated on small family farms at altitudes ranging from about 1,070 to 1,300 meters above sea level, where fertile volcanic soils and a mild mountain climate provide ideal growing conditions. The cooperative focuses on organic and sustainable practices, using shade-grown systems that protect biodiversity, encourage soil health, and maintain natural water sources. Producers cultivate traditional varieties such as Caturra, Catuai, Bourbon, Pache, and Catimor, and processing is typically fully washed with patio drying, ensuring clean and consistent flavor development. With certifications including Organic, Fair Trade, and Regenerative Organic Certified (ROC), PROCAFE not only prioritizes cup quality but also community development, environmental stewardship, and equitable trade for its member families.
