OUR STORY

From One Hectare to a Multi-Farm Coffee Operation

Fazenda Dutra traces its origins to the 1950s when José Dutra Sobrinho, known as Zeca Dutra, began cultivating coffee on just over one hectare of land in the Matas de Minas region of Brazil.

Through decades of reinvestment and continued family involvement, the operation gradually expanded into a network of farms dedicated to producing specialty coffee. Following Zeca Dutra's passing in 1999, management transitioned to the next generation, who continued developing the business while investing in quality-focused production and agricultural education.

Today, Fazenda Dutra represents one of the region's notable family-operated coffee enterprises, combining traditional farming knowledge with modern specialty coffee practices.

PEOPLE BEHIND IT

The Dutra Family

The Dutra Family

Fazenda Dutra remains a family-managed operation led by later generations of the Dutra family, including Walter Cesar Dutra and Ednilson Alves Dutra.

The farm employs approximately 50 permanent workers throughout the year and expands its workforce during harvest season. Beyond coffee production, the operation serves as an important source of employment and agricultural development within the local community.

FARMING PRACTICE

Agroforestry and Organic Cultivation

Coffee is cultivated across mountainous terrain using contour planting techniques that help manage slopes, reduce erosion, and maintain soil stability.

Rather than relying solely on monoculture production, Fazenda Dutra integrates coffee with avocado trees, African mahogany, eucalyptus, and other species through agroforestry systems. These practices contribute to biodiversity, natural shade management, and long-term soil health.

The farm also maintains preserved forest areas, natural water sources, and environmentally focused farming practices that reduce dependence on synthetic inputs while emphasizing composting and natural soil enrichment.

SUSTAINABLE BY NATURE

Investing in Long-Term Environmental Stewardship

Sustainability is integrated throughout Fazenda Dutra's farming operations. The farm utilizes a photovoltaic solar energy system capable of generating approximately 1.38 million kWh annually, helping reduce reliance on conventional energy sources.

More than 5,000 avocado trees and other companion crops are incorporated into the farm's agroforestry systems, supporting biodiversity and soil health while contributing to natural ecosystem balance.

Preserved forest areas, water management initiatives, and internationally recognized certifications demonstrate the farm's commitment to environmental and social responsibility.

Organic Farming

Coffee is cultivated without the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or genetically modified organisms. Instead, farming practices focus on natural soil enrichment, composting, and ecological balance to support long-term soil health and biodiversity. This approach helps preserve surrounding ecosystems while producing coffee that reflects the natural character of its origin.

Water Stewardship

Water stewardship focuses on the responsible management and protection of water resources throughout the coffee production process. This includes practices that reduce water waste during processing, protect natural water sources on the farm, and maintain the health of surrounding watersheds. The goal is to ensure that coffee production supports, rather than strains, local water ecosystems and communities.

Conservation

Protected forest areas, natural water sources, and native vegetation are maintained throughout the property. These conservation efforts support ecosystem health, water management, and biodiversity for future generations.

Agroforestry

Coffee is cultivated alongside avocado trees, African mahogany, eucalyptus, and other species within diversified agroforestry systems. These plantings help improve biodiversity, strengthen soil health, and provide natural shade ac
