The Ketiara Cooperative (Koperasi Pedagang Kopi Ketiara) is a women-led smallholder coffee cooperative based in the lush Gayo Highlands of Aceh Tengah, Sumatra. Founded in 2008 by Ibu Rahmah with just 38 members, Ketiara has grown into a thriving network of over 1,000 smallholder farmer households, around 70% of whom are women. The cooperative is deeply committed to empowering women through leadership opportunities, training, and equitable participation while producing high-quality, organic, and Fair Trade-certified Arabica coffee. Farming at elevations between 1,200–1,650 meters, Ketiara’s members cultivate shade-grown varietals like Bourbon, Typica, and Catimor in rich volcanic soils, processing their coffee using the traditional wet-hulled (giling basah) method that defines the classic Sumatran profile. The cooperative’s coffees are renowned for their earthy, herbal, and chocolate notes with a creamy body and sweet undertones, consistently scoring well in specialty markets. Beyond coffee quality, Ketiara is dedicated to social and environmental responsibility, investing in local education, healthcare, and reforestation while providing economic stability for its members. Through its innovative approach and commitment to community, Ketiara has established itself as a model of sustainable, high-quality coffee production in Indonesia.
