This coffee is sourced from networks of smallholder farmers across the Indonesian archipelago, particularly in volcanic coffee-growing regions surrounding Flores, Timor, Sumatra, and neighboring islands associated with the Komodo trade profile. These farming communities cultivate coffee along steep highland terrain between approximately 1,200 and 2,200 meters above sea level, where cool mountain climates, dense tropical forests, and mineral-rich volcanic landscapes create ideal conditions for specialty coffee production.

Coffee cultivation in these regions is deeply rooted in generational farming traditions. Most producers manage small family-owned plots shaded by native forest trees, fruit trees, and mixed agroforestry crops. Farmers commonly rely on low-intervention cultivation methods that emphasize biodiversity, natural soil fertility, and environmentally sustainable production practices. Many of these coffees are grown organically or with minimal chemical inputs due to the remote nature of the farms and longstanding traditional agricultural systems.

The coffees contributing to this lot include a range of Indonesian processing styles such as washed, natural, and wet-hulled methods, which together create the deep body, earthy sweetness, spice character, and layered complexity associated with the Komodo profile. Cherries are typically hand-harvested during peak ripeness and processed at small village mills or cooperative collection centers before drying and export preparation.

After selection, the coffees are decaffeinated using the Swiss Water Process, a chemical-free method that removes caffeine while preserving much of the coffee’s original flavor structure and regional character. Rather than representing a single estate, this offering reflects the combined efforts of numerous independent smallholders and cooperative networks throughout Indonesia, showcasing the diversity, resilience, and craftsmanship of the country’s volcanic coffee-growing regions.
