The coffee in this lot is grown by **smallholder farmers in the highlands of Aceh Province, Sumatra, Indonesia, predominantly in the Gayo Highlands around the Takengon area near Lake Laut Tawar. Most farms are **small—about one hectare in size—and family-run, with growers relying on traditional and organic farming practices that have been passed down through generations. These farmers typically cultivate a mix of Arabica varietals such as Gayo 1, Ateng, Timtim, and Abyssinia in fertile volcanic soils at elevations around 1,200–1,400 meters above sea level, which, combined with the region’s cool, misty climate, creates ideal conditions for coffee cultivation. Many producers are organized into cooperatives that help with resources, training, quality control, and market access, and they often intercrop coffee with food crops for both income and sustenance. The coffee is harvested by hand and brought to local mills for wet-hulling (Giling Basah) processing, a unique Indonesian method that contributes to the distinctive earthy, sweet, and complex flavor profile this region is known for.
