Organic Brazil Natural Fazenda Dutra Scr 15+ (GP)

New Arrival from Brazil

NOVEMBER 25, 2024

Minas Gerais is the largest of the three major Brazilian growing regions with six micro-regions, which account for 50 percent of Brazil’s production. From this volume of coffee, we landed on a special treat traceable to a single estate in the Matas de Minas region, which is known for its rolling hills and uneven terrain lending to farms that are small to medium in size. Dutra Family started planting coffee in the region over 50 years ago and has grown the estate to nearly 2,500 acres with 10 distinct farms where coffee cherry from 3 million coffee trees is harvested by hand by more than 600 seasonal workers. While this estate seems big, it is actually relatively small to medium by Brazilian standards, which has allowed the Dutra family to focus on specialty grade, fully traceable lots for direct trade relationships. But we don’t want to downplay the big things happening at Fazenda Dutra, which includes a passion for sustainability. Solar energy is big at this fazenda where all of the depulpers run on solar power and the mechanical dryers are next on the agenda for this clean energy conversion. The estate also boasts near 750 acres of native forest to protect water sources and create natural barriers to protect the coffee trees from wind and erosion. The Dutra family also takes their role as employer very seriously with big investments in a school located at the estate and a health care program for employees and their families.

Each farm averages a bit over a hectare of land each, with an altitude of 1,000-1,400 meters above sea level. This co-op was started with a culmination of farmers under a Technical Assistance grant project which was funded by Asia Development Bank. 4200 farmers were organized into groups and trained for three years on topics such as pre- and post-harvest practices, nursery management, gender sensitivity, financial literacy, among others. This was organized under the hopes that this cooperative—which is both fair trade and organic certified--would support rehabilitation, rejuvenation, and quality improvements as time went on. The dedicated, well trained, motivated farmers truly make this coffee special as they work hard to make significant improvements in quality and quantity in the upcoming years.

Organic Ethiopia Coffee Fair Trade

Organic Ethiopia Coffee Fair Trade

Located just 6 km south of the town of Dilla in Sidama Zone, Chichu washing station has produced some of Sidamo’s finest coffees for decades. Relatively small compared to other Sidamo wet mills, Chichu receives cherry from approximately 600 farmers each year, producing just over two full containers of coffee both washed and natural process. All though Chichu is located in Sidama Zone, many of the farmers delivering coffees to the washing station are located in the Southern Nation Nationalities and People’s Region (SNNPR) zone, very close to Yirgacheffe. For this reason, like many things in coffee, labeling coffee from Chichu as “Sidamo” or “Yirgacheffe” can be a little tricky.

Skin drying tables are used extensively post-washing to remove superficial moisture from the parchment and improve the uniformity of the drying. Workers sort the parchment coffee three different times during the drying process, once on the skin drying tables and twice while turning the coffee on the large beds.

Organic Honduras - COMSA Marcala SHG Fair Trade USA

New Arrival from Honduras

AUGUST 21, 2024

In the year 2000, 62 Honduran coffee farmers joined together with a common goal to transform their farms from conventional to organic production and formed COMSA (Cafe Organico Marcala, S.A). In 2001, fostered by a foundation called Funder, COMSA earned their organic certification from Bio Latina which has enabled them to market their coffee to more international buyers and realize better selling prices for their coffee. In February 2006, COMSA then applied for and was granted Fair Trade certification status. COMSA uses the Fair Trade price premium to fund many social projects including paying teachers’ salaries and purchasing school supplies. The premium also finances the construction of kitchens in the schools in support of the Merienda Escolar program that provides meals for school children. Royal Coffee New York is proud to support COMSA by purchasing their excellent quality, organic and Fair Trade certified coffee.

Organic Colombia Sierra Nevada Sol Naciente (GP)

New Arrival from Colombia

MAY 14, 2024

Santa Marta’s Sierra Nevada is a Caribbean coastal range distinct from the Andes range that makes up the majority of Colombia’s coffeelands. For this reason there is a sense of self-reliance best symbolized by the level of intercropping common for most coffee farms where you will find bananas, corn and avocado trees grown for local consumption. While self-sufficiency has many advantages, selling specialty coffee on the international market is not easily achieved in isolation. This is where Inconexus, a Colombian export company enters the picture. Inconexus has developed a successful model of sourcing specialty coffee in some of the most renowned growing regions of Colombia. The key is creating a support network for producers, which builds confidence resulting in excellent coffee. Inconexus has used this model to grow an organization of 19 producers called Grupo Sierra. The collaboration has helped the producers improve farm management and processing protocol. Producers also benefit from the close proximity of the Inconexus cupping lab and dry mill located in Santa Marta where coffee is quickly evaluated, and parchment is stored in grainpro for protection from the coastal humidity. The result is a distinct, complex, clean and consistent regional blend.

Costa Rica La Amistad

New Arrival from Costa Rica

MARCH 26,2024

Hacienda la Amistad, located in Coto Brus, a canton in the province of Puntarenas, Costa Rica, is owned and operated by Roberto Montero, a third generation coffee farmer. Roberto’s grandfather first came to the area in the early 1900's as part of a team surveying the border between Costa Rica and the newly formed country of Panama. Roberto’s grandfather later purchased over 10,000 hectares of land and began to cultivate coffee. Roberto’s family has returned more than 6,000 hectares of land to the government of Costa Rica for the preservation of La Amistad International Park, the largest natural reserve in Central America. Only 300 hectares of land are utilized for coffee cultivation while the remainder of the 4,000 hectare estate is preserved forest teeming with wildlife. Roberto’s commitment to organic farming pairs harmoniously with his commitment to his community. During the coffee harvest, Roberto provides housing and free access to medical care for the seasonal pickers because most are indigenous people from Panama who come to La Amistad with their entire families. Roberto also takes pride in his ability to provide more than 100 full-time jobs to his neighbors from Las Mellizas, not only in coffee cultivation, but also in the dried fruit operation that he runs year round at La Amistad. Roberto hosts an annual employee celebration to recognize all their hard work and he also distributes school supplies to their children each year before school starts.
