Organic Colombia Excelso EP Tolima 82+ Cup

New Arrival from Colombia

SEPTEMBER 19, 2022

Tolima lies deeply nestled in the Central Andes. While the climate is well suited for coffee production, Tolima has remained a less popular region due to the prevalence of armed conflict and drug trafficking. Many farming communities have been caught in the crosshairs of these conflicts.

More recently, the region has had an opportunity to open up and reduce incidents of violence and drug production or smuggling. Despite its complicated past, Tolima is Colombia’s third-largest coffee-producing department.

In such conditions, producer organizations play an important role in transforming their communities. Associations or cooperatives can create more jobs and make coffee appear more appealing to young people. Many groups in the region organize courses and training to develop barista skills, quality control and even business management.

In a region where the job availability outside of coffee farming is very limited, providing new opportunities for work is essential to draw young people away from becoming involved in the endless cycle of violence and criminality. On top of all the community-wide benefits, being part of a cooperative helps producers gain much better access to support on an agronomical, commercial and economic level.

Organic Brazil Natural Fazenda Dutra Scr 15+ (GP)

New Arrival from Brazil

AUGUST 23,2022

Minas Gerais is the largest of the three major Brazilian growing regions with six micro-regions, which account for 50 percent of Brazil’s production. From this volume of coffee, we landed on a special treat traceable to a single estate in the Matas de Minas region, which is known for its rolling hills and uneven terrain lending to farms that are small to medium in size. Dutra Family started planting coffee in the region over 50 years ago and has grown the estate to nearly 2,500 acres with 10 distinct farms where coffee cherry from 3 million coffee trees is harvested by hand by more than 600 seasonal workers. While this estate seems big, it is actually relatively small to medium by Brazilian standards, which has allowed the Dutra family to focus on specialty grade, fully traceable lots for direct trade relationships. But we don’t want to downplay the big things happening at Fazenda Dutra, which includes a passion for sustainability. Solar energy is big at this fazenda where all of the depulpers run on solar power and the mechanical dryers are next on the agenda for this clean energy conversion. The estate also boasts near 750 acres of native forest to protect water sources and create natural barriers to protect the coffee trees from wind and erosion. The Dutra family also takes their role as employer very seriously with big investments in a school located at the estate and a health care program for employees and their families.

Guatemala FTO SHB EP Fancy Bicafe - 83+ Cup

New Arrival from Guatemala

AUGUST 18,2022

Guatemala boasts a variety of growing regions and conditions that produce spectacular coffees. Today, the country is revered as a producer of some of the most flavorful and nuanced cups worldwide. We are proud to work with several exceptional in-country partners to bring these coffees to market.

The Guatemalan coffee industry experienced a major setback with the 2010 appearance of Coffee Leaf Rust (CLR) in Latin America. The epidemic peaked in severity in 2012, and though CLR continues to affect some farms, Guatemala continues to produce high-quality, record-breaking coffees. In 2017, new and varied processing methods pushed prices at the Guatemalan Cup of Excellence contest to record highs.

The quality of coffee being produced in Guatemala is increasing, overall, due to the diversity of the industry’s producers. There are more and more small holder farmers producing exceptional coffee at high altitudes. Cooperatives are becoming more appealing to so many smallholders because they often offer farmers financing and other support for improving their farming and processing and are frequently able to offer higher prices for cherry than middlemen. Many cooperatives have initiated quality improvement training for farmer members and are becoming more adept at helping members market their coffee as specialty.

Organic India Robusta Cherry AA - Fair Trade

New Arrival from India

JUNE 16,2022

Cherry Robusta coffee from India is one of the world’s great Robustas. Most countries consider Robusta as the poor relation of the coffee family. However in India they apply the same care to the cultivation, harvest and processing of Robusta coffee as they do to Arabica. In fact, Robusta production in India is almost double that of Arabica. All high-quality, natural or dry-processed Robusta and Arabica coffees in India are known as Cherry. This is not to be confused with the cherry fruit on the coffee tree! Cherry A indicates it is one of the highest grades of Indian coffee.

Generally roasted robusta beans produce a strong, full-bodied coffee with a distinctive earthy flavour. There may be more bitterness than Arabica. However, some coffee drinkers love the powerful flavour for its strength and finish. Moreover, Cherry Robusta is important in traditional Italian coffee culture, especially for espresso blends. Some baristas also claim that Cherry Robusta gives a better foam or crema on the coffee.

Organic Sumatra Decaf Swiss Water - FAIR TRADE

Organic Sumatra Decaf Swiss Water - FAIR TRADE

Northern Sumatra produces the most famous coffees from Indonesia. These are produced using the unique wet-hulled method often referred to as “semi- washed,” which is something of a hybrid between the natural (dry) and washed methods. Our Sumatra Swiss Water Decaf Coffee is Fair Trade Organic, processed by a completely chemical-free decaffeination method to retain the best flavors and body.

Organic Sumatra Decaf Grade 1 DP - SWP FTO

New Arrival from Indonesia

MAY 20,2022

Indonesia Sumatra Decaf is harvested by local smallholder farmers growing the Catimor and Typica coffee plants. These variants have earthy flavors along with hints of almond, chocolate, and lemongrass to create a full-bodied coffee with low acidity. Indonesia Sumatra Decaf coffee beans are chemical and additive free, processed with the only the purest water sources. The coffee cherries are wet hulled and sun dried to create a full-bodied coffee with low acidity. The Swiss Water Process is a chemical free decaffeination method which uses only the purest hot water in British Colombia to soak green coffee beans, dissolving the caffeine. The water is then filtered, removing 99.9% of the caffeine without diminishing the flavor of the beans, creating a light, smooth brew.

Organic Peru Coffee Grade 1 - Fair Trade

New Arrival from Peru

MAY 10,2022

Farmers in Peru usually process their coffee on their own farms using the Fully washed method. Cherry is usually pulped, fermented and dried in the sun. Traditionally, smaller farmers would use tarps laid on the ground or under the roof of their homes. Increasingly, cooperatives are establishing centralized drying facilities – usually raised beds or drying sheds where members are encouraged to dry their parchment. Some farmers are beginning to adopt these practices on their own farms, and drying greenhouses and parabolic beds are becoming more common as farmers pivot towards specialty markets.

After drying, coffee will then be sold in parchment to the cooperative. Producers who are not members of a cooperative often have the opportunity to sell on to cooperatives, as well.

Inza is surrounded by volcanoes, plus the altitude and climate of this region make it perfect for growing specialty coffee. Very small producers tend to their land and hold on to their traditions. Many of them have produced coffee with little or no chemicals for generations.  The Pillimue Family, crucial members of the community, led a program to certify 80 producers in organic practices. The Dutra brothers have been involved in growing coffee since the day they were born. Production takes place in a mountainous region, approximately 1400 meters above sea level. Due to the artisanal process, the altitude and the soil of the farm, they obtain a differentiated product and, with this, the coffees are classified every year among the best coffees in Brazil and in the world, both in quality and in sustainability.

There are more than 1300 hectares of land, among which, 800 hectares are dedicated to the cultivation of coffees planted in contour lines and the remainder destined to the production of more than two hundred tons of avocados together with coffee.
